God’s Protection

“The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26

When you feel fear what calms you? When you are threatened how do you respond? Over the years I have hid under the covers, cried, worried, sought human assistance, and begged God for help. The threats were real, and my life could have come crumbling down around me…indeed a few times it did. But at the end of the day when there was nowhere to run, my Savior was quietly calling.

It is one thing to see danger coming and know what you are facing, but another when you think you’re fine, then suddenly realize you are in harm’s way. As an 18-year-old living in New York city, I believed I could navigate through Manhattan without error. Well, after finishing a performance one evening I decided to walk home. I quickly got lost in the winding streets of Soho. The sun was going down and there was not a person in sight. As I began to panic God sent a taxi and the driver asked, “Are you lost?” I replied with a very relieved “YES.” But my concern was only mildly abated since I also had no money just change in my bag. I admitted this and the driver insisted to take me to safety, because in his words I did not look like a Soho girl. While I can look back upon this moment with disbelief of my lack of awareness, I suspect this is true for most of my life. Which brings me to the point of gratefulness for God’s protection. I am so blessed to serve a God who covers my going out and coming in, the God who knows what dangers I will face and has lovingly prepared my rescue. Specifically, God has rescued me from:

1) Sin and death through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross-”For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

2) My enemies- “So we may boldly say: The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

3) Fears-” For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father’.” Romans 8:15

In fact, for all believers “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2
